Solidwool Composite Sheets.

Solidwool was born from the idea to create something beautiful, to create sustainable design with an unbreakable link to nature. A unique composite material, Solidwool is made in the UK using British wool and bio-resin. Think fibreglass, but with wool. Wool is used as the reinforcement, bio-resin as the binder & the end result is a strong, beautiful and unique composite material with a story that connects people to the land it has come from.

Solidwool is a sustainable alternative to today’s petrochemical based structural reinforced plastics and composites.

Herdwick – the iconic breed of the Lake District was the original inspiration behind Solidwool. The upland sheep dramatically lost its value in recent years. Historically used in the UK carpet industry, this wool had fallen out of favour and was considered almost worthless, a by-product of sheep farming. Solidwool producers have turned the way wool has been used on its head and have turned this by-product into design created with conscience and soul.

The fleeces used are plentiful, yet there is little demand for this coarse, robust and wiry wool. Both breeds are native to the UK, and have been for centuries, so it is important to keep these sheep and their shepherds in the landscapes they belong.

By using traditional, hardy breeds they are supporting British farms and reducing their carbon footprint by using a British product. Their goal is to make Solidwool the most natural, lowest impact and highest quality wool composite material out there.

Solidwool can be milled, drilled and cut using mechanical, laser and water jet. Solidwool can also be sanded and polished.

Sheets can be laminated onto other materials such as wood to create table tops. Solidwool sheets can also be bonded together to create a thicker material, & can also be laser etched.

Solidwool can be finished and polished to a gentle sheen. For a high gloss finish, a secondary polyurethane or acrylic clear-coat can be applied.

Solidwool also produce chairs & tables with various colour options.
